The Maverick Monks

A young man who rode a motorbike to reach Jyekundo to look for his relatives said

“The aid distributions to quake victims were uneven. Some families spent the night outside without any tent in freezing temperature. Those who don’t have tents slept among the dead bodies to keep them warm in this freeze temperature. My relatives’ family has not received a single aid supplies yet. It is said aid supplies have arrived, but there is problem with the distribution of those aid supplies. More aggressive people grabbed more tents and the officials took possession of them, while the weak ones, women and children left without any. It is total chaos for the rush of aid supplies. Those who grabbed more tents and supplies resell at higher prices".  Detail report on this look up on RFA website http://www.rfa.org/english/news/tibet/tibet-china-qinghai-04172010213555.html.

One local leader took five tents for him and told residents not to complain, for they have done enough. Lots of the tents are also occupied by the troops and relief workers. Not all victims who are in need of tents and food supplies have received sufficient aid”.

Another resident in Jykendu said

“Dead bodies were thrown in Drichu river as well as cremated.

The earth quick specialists and sniff dogs arrived face altitude sickness that hampered rescue effort.

Tibetan monks continue to come, and aids pouring in from other part of Tibet, especially the monastery. The damage is immense. The small towns in the outskirt of Jyekunda were completely flattened. There are cracks to the Bridge on Drichu river, which is the only road access to Jykundu (Yushu) from Siling. Chinese set up road block on bridge of Drichu river not allowing all Tibetan aid workers to come in.

Some part of the affected areas were still left untouched, no enough rescue workers to dig all”.

“Despite of the Chinese blocking Tibetan aid workers, they are still going to help the quake victims, as there are severe needs of medication, food supplies, and shelter. Lead by the monasteries, and head lamas donations were collected all over Tibet. On April 17,

Under the guidance of the Tehor Khonsar, Thupten Gelek Rinpoche, a team of relief workers from Gandze monastery headed to Jyekundo. The Rinpoche donated 20000 Chinese yuan, Gandze monastery donated Yuan 80000, the monks of Gandze monasteries collected 30000 Yuan . Our monastery had organized mass prayers for the victims since the beginning of the disaster.”. Said by one of the relief workers.

Another Tibetan resident in Khandze said.

“ The general Tibetans have also volunteered to collect rations and food supplies from all villages and towns. But unfortunately the Chinese were blocking Tibetan workers to reach the affected areas. Volunters aids workers both lay person and monks are pouring in from Kham Dangro, Sethar and Gandze. . Tibetan from Amdo and other parts were also sending aids to the affected areas”

Tibetans see that the Chinese were not sincere in their relief works for which Tibetans feel growing resentment”.

" A team of relief workers from Amdo Regun, left for Jykundo on the morning of 18th, carrying food supplies collected from local Tibetan, that includes Tsampa (powered barly flower), dry noodle loaded in ten vehicles, as well as monetary contribution of 20000 (yuan). To show solidarity for the Tibetan affected in earth quake, Rigon monastery organized mass prayers on 17th.”

Another nonresident Tibetan business men who went to Jykundo to do cordycep business “summer grass, winter worm”. speaking from his cell said that he has “escaped to hill for fear of further tremor. I was staying in a hotel, on that fateful day and when I went outside in the morning to pee, the quake struck. Everyone inside the hotel was killed under the rubble. Power lines went down and I wont be able to recharge my cell phone now”.

“Around 300 of injured quake victims were receiving treatment in Chengdu. Injured quake victims were taking to Chengdu, Siling and Lhanzhou for treatment by the Chinese, and this kind of medical assistance is doing good” said by a monk from Jyekundo, who is doing relief works.

A Tibetan university student from Chengdu, who is caregiving those injured as well as doing translations for them said. “In Chengdu, the injured people were admitted into three big hospitals. Approximately there are 300 injured people receiving treatment in three hospitals. These victims include children, received head injuries, broken leg and hands, broken backbone etc. it appears that the Chinese are paying for their health care. Tibetan university students and teachers in Chengdu were extending help for the victims. ”
